The EU has long classified Turkey as a “third country” with which it uses transactionalism as its modus operandi. Similarly, it has long classified Turkey as a country, which should remain at any cost within NATO’s sphere of influence. This new paradigm that steers relations in the post-candidacy era, is clearly devoid of a value-based and rules-based interaction. Despite this reality, the EU continues to pay lip service to rules, as in the case of Ankara’s disputes with neighbouring member states Cyprus and Greece. It also continues to pay lip service to shattered values, in other words massive human rights’ violations and the dissolution of the rule of law in Turkey.
