The Delegation of German Industry and Commerce in Sri Lanka (AHK Sri Lanka) organized a conference on Energy Efficiency and Self-sufficiency in Industry to promote opportunities of cooperation in the field of energy efficient solutions. About 200 representatives of business, politics and media from Sri Lanka and Germany joined the virtual event which was organized within the frame of the German “Energy Solutions made in Germany” Initiative of the German Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy. The conference was opened by State Minister of Solar, Wind and Hydro Power Generation Projects Development Duminda Dissanayake, the German Ambassador to Sri Lanka and the Maldives Holger Seubert and Chief Delegate of German Industry and Commerce in Sri Lanka Andreas Hergenröther.

Germany sets bigger wind and solar auctions for next few years

26 April 2021 Germany’s governing coalition has agreed higher renewable expansion goals for next year but failed to set longer-term targets for the years up to 2030. Parliamentarians from the Social Democrats and the conservative CDU–CSU union decided to increase solar PV capacities foreseen for auctions in 2022 three-fold, from 1.9 gigawatts (GW) to 6 GW. The tender volume for onshore wind capacity will be raised from 2.9 GW to 4 GW, energy minister Peter Altmaier announced at a press conference last Thursday. Altmaier called it a “brave” decision, which he said had been difficult to reach by the coalition partners. Altmaier said it was a sensible decision to give renewables a short-term boost and leave the rest to the next government that will be formed after the general elections in autumn 2021.

Germany s planned solar auctions expansion not sufficient , trade bodies say

Germany’s renewable energy sector has said new government plans to more than triple the PV capacity included in next year’s auctions do not go far enough in supporting long-term solar deployment. The coalition government last week agreed to increase the 2022 PV tender volumes from 1.9GW to 6GW, while capacity for onshore wind will go up from 2.9GW to 4GW. With the one-off auctions set to take place after Germany’s general election in September 2021, German solar industry association BSW said the coalition’s announcement “must be understood as a mere electoral manoeuvre”.

Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue (BETD) Media Fellowship 2021 for Journalists worldwide

Energiewende, the   (#betd21), which has become the leading international forum on the green energy transformation. Every year, high-level participants from politics, industry, science and civil society gather in Berlin for two days to discuss the shift to a sustainable energy system. In this diverse international conference, scientific expertise is paired with practical know-how, policymakers engage with civic groups, and young and experienced generations enrich each other by working hand in hand to accelerate the energy transition. For several years, the Federal Foreign Office, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and the German Renewable Energy Federation (BEE e.V.) invited international journalists to report on the BETD. This BETD Media Fellowship allowed young journalists from around the world to gather in the German capital in order to:

Bundestag passes amendments to Germany s renewable energy act

The German Bundestag passed an amendment to the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) on Thursday (17 December), without support from the opposition. The leftist Die Linke and Greens have called for higher green electricity production targets while the liberal FDP wants to allow “negative emission technologies.” EURACTIV Germany reports. The law will come into force on 1 January 2021, completely replacing the EEG Act of 2017, to help the country meet the goal of producing 65% of its electricity from carbon-free sources by 2030. The Social Democrats (SPD) wanted to stipulate in the law that the expansion of renewable energies served public safety. This passage alarmed opposition parties and environmental protection organisations alike, as they feared that a legally stipulated public interest could also have an impact on judicial decisions.
