BERLIN: Rescue workers laboured to deal with damage laid bare by receding water on Saturday as the death toll from disastrous flooding in Western Europe rose above 160 and thoughts turned to the lengthy job of rebuilding communities devastated in minutes.
The death toll in western Germany’s Rhineland-Palatinate state, home to the badly hit Ahrweiler county, rose to 98. Another 43 people were confirmed dead in neighbouring North Rhine-Westphalia state. Belgium’s national crisis center said the country’s confirmed death toll rose to 27.

Water levels remained high in parts of western Germany on Saturday (July 17) as rescue workers continued their search for survivors of the country s worst natural disaster in half a century. The past several days of flooding have cut off entire communities power and communications, and collapsed homes. And, according to police estimates early on Saturday, at least 133 people have died. That includes some 90 people in the Ahrweiler district south of Cologne and hundreds remain missing. Late on Friday (July 16) around 700 people were evacuated after a dam broke in the town of Wassenberg near Cologne, authorities said. Berlin [Germany], July 18 (ANI): The death toll in devastating flooding in western Germany and Belgium rose to over 160 on Saturday after burst rivers and flash floods this week collapsed houses and ripped up roads and power lines.
Around 143 people died in the flooding in Germany s worst natural disaster in more than half a century. That included about 98 in the Ahrweiler district south of Cologne, The Straits Times reported quoting police.
Hundreds of people were still missing or unreachable as several areas were inaccessible due to high water levels while communication in some places was still down.
