21.02.2021 Increasing battery and fuel cell power with quantum computing

The German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) is conducting research into new materials for more powerful batteries and fuel cells. DLR scientists are now using a quantum computer to simulate electrochemical processes within energy storage systems. This makes it possible to design the materials used in such a way that the performance and energy density of batteries and fuel cells increase significantly.
MAHEPA consortium marks latest flights of HY4 fuel cell hybrid electric aircraft
The MAHEPA consortium announced that technology developed as part of the project has been successfully proven in flight on board the Hy4 fuel cell hybrid electric aircraft (earlier post).
The sixth-generation of hydrogen propulsion has been completely revised from 2016 to 2020, according to aviation requirements. As part of the test campaign launched in November 2020, there have been more than 30 take-offs and flights of up to two hours.
The experience with the sixth-generation drive and the modular structure of the fuel cell would support both air taxi applications with 1.5 hours flight duration as well as an aircraft with up to 40 passengers and a range of up to 2000 km (1200 miles).
COLOGNE, Germany (DLR PR) On 17 December 2020, the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) extended their framework agreement on bilateral cooperation for a further ten years.
The agreement was signed by NASA Administrator, Jim Bridenstine, Chair of the DLR Executive Board, Professor Anke Kaysser-Pyzalla, and Member of the DLR Executive Board and Head of the DLR Space Administration, Walther Pelzer, who met via video conference to mark the occasion.
“Groundbreaking and exciting research. This is the result of the long-standing collaboration between DLR and NASA. I am delighted about the continuation of this successful cooperation,” said Kaysser-Pyzalla, following the meeting.
