Editorial: Our All-Star team, part one

Major League Baseball pauses this week for its annual All-Star game. Well, almost annual. There was last year’s pandemic-shortened season that skipped the observance. Baseball is back this year, though, and so are we with our own All-Star teams. Today we recognize nine heavy-hitters in the Southwest and Southside delegation to the General Assembly. On Tuesday, we’ll have a line-up of nine other All-Stars who aren’t in our delegation to Richmond. As with baseball, our All-Star picks come from different teams, so we have both Democrats and Republicans. Here they are and why: 1. State Sen. Bill Stanley, R-Franklin County. Once again he championed two causes that have special resonance in our region but are really statewide issues. Calls about unemployment benefits still aren t being answered. Staff to settle disputed claims are leaving, even as the state hires people to speed the process. And the replacement of an antiquated computer system to help unemployed Virginians track their cases still faces potential risks that could temporarily shut it down during the transition. Those are the concerns of the General Assembly s watchdog agency, which isn t waiting to bark a warning to frustrated lawmakers. It cites limits to progress made by the Virginia Employment Commission in improving the performance of an unemployment system that has been overwhelmed by calls for help from Virginians who lost their jobs during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Online Governing to End, For The Most Part

After going online because of the pandemic, zoning decisions and regulatory hearings on Zoom are coming to an end, for the most part. Boards and commissions across the state are having to adjust how they do business. During a Virginia Redistricting Commission Meeting last week, commissioner Jose Feliciano reminded members that when they met this week would determine where they met. Members of the Richmond City Council meet virtually on June 28, 2021. “We re talking about possibly meeting late next week which is Thursday or Friday - which is the first and second -  which has passed the 30th deadline,” he said. “So I think that s going to be a little stickler.”
