A dream comes true at Daytona
by Bob Priddy, Contributing Editor
(NASCAR) Michael McDowell finally wins a NASCAR Cup race in his 358th start and he picks the NASCAR’s biggest race to do it.
McDowell drove between the two leaders of the Daytona 500 as they crashed on the final lap of the rain-delayed race to finish ahead of last year’s series champion Chase Elliott. McDowell, driving for one of the most prominent small-budget teams in the sport, had only three previous top-five finishes in his dozen years as a fulltime driver in the series.

Michael McDowell won the Daytona 500 late Sunday night after a rain delay, a crazy wreck, a really late restart and a typically-wild finish during the Great American Race at the Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida.
It was the first-ever NASCAR Cup Series win for McDowell, who has driven on the circuit since 2008. It was the 358th career race for McDowell, and his first win.
There was a wreck on the final lap of the 2021 Daytona 500, and McDowell was in the lead when the caution flag came out, NASCAR officials revealed.

Chase Briscoe, Ross Chastain and Tyler Reddick gave new meaning to fast food during a rain delay at Daytona International Speedway.
The drivers left the famed track during a lengthy red flag during the Daytona 500 and made quick trips across the street to grab some grub.
Briscoe s wife, Marissa, tweeted a photo of Chase wearing his firesuit in the drive-thru at Panda Express.
Ross Chastain followed suit a short time late and posted a pic of him in the drive-thru at McDonald s, a sponsor. He noted that this is “rain delays in 21.”
Reddick sat down inside Cheddar s Scratch Kitchen, also a sponsor, and ate some chicken pot pie, saying “some much needed comfort food.”
