Reactions: Trading Jesús Luzardo risky, but Starling Marte is an impact gamble for Oakland A s

Photo by Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images Holy crap. Not to be crude. That’s an actual term in baseball, a “holy crap trade,” a blockbuster that really gets your attention and shows that a team means business. The term is actually “holy shit trade” but I thought I’d tone down the profanity a bit. Jesús Luzardo going east in exchange for a two-month rental of excellent outfielder Starling Marte. But within the small ponds of these two perpetual underdog franchises it qualifies, not only because of the impact it can make but also because of how jarringly unexpected it was.

Starling Marte trade: Both A s, Marlins win in deadline deal

Jul 28, 2021 Last year, the Marlins brought in Starling Marte on a move that was bold and fun and a little unexpected. They’re sending him out in the same way. Miami’s Wednesday afternoon deal with Oakland will send Marte to the A’s in exchange for pitcher Jesús Luzardo a one-for-one swap that trades one of the best rental bats on the market for an intriguing young pitcher. (Miami will pay the $4 million remaining on Marte’s contract.) For Oakland, it’s a clear message about how the team views its playoff chances, with the front office trying to make a statement as it holds on to a wild-card berth. For Miami, it’s a big swing on a pitcher who has lost some of his prospect luster but still has the potential to bolster an exciting, young rotation. The result is a deadline move that feels somewhat rare a one-for-one deal of major-league players, between two teams in quite different places, that nonetheless makes sense for both sides.

Game Thread #102: Oakland A s at San Diego Padres

Photo by Ron Jenkins/Getty Images The Oakland A’s are having a weird month. They’re still in playoff position, but you wouldn’t know it from reading the sky-is-falling comment threads here on Athletics Nation. The Mariners just humbled them three days in a row to climb back into the Wild Card race, but then Seattle traded away their closer today. Also Seattle has an atrocious minus-49 run differential, which either matters or doesn’t depending on your chosen narrative at that moment. Now the A’s head into some interleague action, which isn’t a good thing because the NL West is the best division in baseball right now. On Tuesday they’ll face the third-place San Diego Padres, who have the eight-best record in MLB (1.5 games above the A’s). Both clubs made trades in the last couple days, with the Padres getting All-Star hitter
