ICE, seeking deportation, won t release man indicted in Souza-Baranowski prison guard attack

ICE, seeking deportation, won’t release man indicted in Souza-Baranowski prison guard attack WORCESTER Officials for U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement are refusing to turn over a man Worcester authorities are trying to prosecute for his role in a January 2020 attack on prison guards at the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center, lawyers said in court Wednesday.  Lennon Dossantos, 26, is in ICE custody in New Hampshire, a prosecutor said, and the federal agency says it plans to deport him rather than turn him over to face charges.  Dossantos was indicted in Worcester Superior Court in February 2020 on six charges related to a Jan. 10, 2020 attack at the maximum-security prison on the Lancaster-Shirley line that left four guards hurt.

Former Cambridge officer Timothy Caulfield gets probation for robbing 86-year-old Southboro man

WORCESTER A former Cambridge police officer was placed on probation for  four years Monday after admitting to robbing an 86-year-old Southboro man he followed home from an ATM machine. Timothy Caulfield, 49, received the sentence in Worcester Superior Court after pleading guilty to charges of unarmed robbery of a victim 60 or older and assault and battery on a person 60 or older.  Authorities said Caulfield, on Jan. 2, followed an 86-year-old man home from a Framingham ATM and accosted him in his Southboro driveway.  They said Caulfield robbed the man by taking his wallet and cellphone from his pocket. He also threatened the man, police said, but did not hurt him.

Momoh Kamara denied bid to probe claim jacket was damaged at laundromat, not fire that killed Christopher Roy

WORCESTER Momoh Kamara, the West Boylston man accused of setting the 2018 fire in which Worcester firefighter Christopher Roy died, was denied an attempt Thursday to probe a contention that heat damage to a jacket seized from his home occurred at a laundromat.  Kamara is charged with second-degree murder, arson and armed burglary. After a hearing in which he heard from the laundromat owners, Worcester Superior Court Judge James Gavin Reardon Jr. determined there was no basis to order the business to turn over records.  Kamara’s lawyer, Blake J. Rubin, told Reardon Thursday his client contends the jacket was damaged at a city laundromat and that a credit was issued as a result.

Worcester judges, lawyers grapple with logistics as delayed murder trials mulled

WORCESTER - With COVID-19 leading to a backlog in court cases across the state, local judges and lawyers are grappling with a variety of issues as they consider whether they can try and conduct murder trials this spring.  Concerns about safety, jurors skipping service and the possibility of participants having to wear masks were among potential pitfalls raised Monday as one local judge probed the topic. Worcester Superior Court Judge Daniel M. Wrenn is calling dozens of pending murder cases in for status hearings this week, telling lawyers he’s working on identifying which cases should be prioritized for possible trials this spring.
