A LONG-SERVING councillor who took to painting tired-looking street furniture herself in a bid to smarten up her ward has hit out at the “neglected” state of the benches on one of Middlesbrough’s main roads. Councillor Joan McTigue said she was embarrassed at the benches on Marton Road which are passed by thousands of motorists heading into and out of the town each day. Cllr McTigue said she was “sick of looking at” one bench at Marton crossroads, where the road intersects with Ladgate Lane, and highlighted the sorry appearance of a bench opposite the Aldi supermarket store. The independent Longlands and Beechwood ward member also complained about fencing with missing links and broken pavement stones on a foot/cycle path next to the James Cook University Hospital.
