Raphael Warnock s campaign for the moral high ground

Raphael Warnock’s campaign for the moral high ground Clyde McGrady © Melina Mara/The Washington Post Georgia Senate candidate Raphael Warnock has made his identity as a Black Christian preacher a central feature of his campaign. ALBANY, Ga. On a mild December night, deep in the southwest corner of the Peach State, the opening keyboard riff to Stevie Wonder s Higher Ground plays in the parking lot of a civic center. It feels like a Sunday service. A warm-up act leads everybody in prayer; the mostly Black congregants bow their heads. Some proudly sport their Black fraternity and sorority paraphernalia on cars, T-shirts and jackets. A woman sprays the podium with Lysol. Then the Rev. Raphael Warnock bounds onto the stage.

2020 Top 10: Emporians gather for peaceful protest in wake of George Floyd

No. 7 - June 6, 2020 As the world grappled with a rapidly spreading pandemic, Americans rallied together in another fight. Voices joined together again, louder, demanding justice for victims of police brutality and for an end to systemic racism. While some protest marches turned violent, Emporia’s march on June 5 was peaceful — a unifying show of community in a time of turmoil. More than 500 Emporians and surrounding community members of all ages, backgrounds and colors joined together Friday afternoon to speak out against racial inequality in the United States and demand justice for victims of police brutality. Organized by Emporia State students, community leaders and local members of the Black Lives Matter movement, Friday’s event included both an opportunity for silent, contemplative prayer and a chance for protestors to voice frustrations loud and clear, in some cases, directly to members of law enforcement.
