The rules of education were a hot topic in April of 1907.
First off, there were a lot more school districts in Stutsman County in 1907. At one meeting, 60 school directors showed up and there may have been a few that didn’t make it to the meeting sponsored by the county superintendent.
These would have been the one-room schools. The buildings are sometimes still visible out in the country, although vacant and dilapidated for decades.
Attendance at those schools may have been a problem. An article about the meeting noted that in Stutsman County, less than half the students attended school 60 days during the school year.
