It is telling that none of the House or Senate finance committee co-chairs are part of the group. The next meeting is this Wednesday at 2 pm at the Anchorage LIO. Don’t hold your breath for a comprehensive plan. There has been several of these groups over the decades. Zero has changed. There are three levers: Permanent Fund, spending, revenues. That’s it. A comprehensive plan will require pulling a bit on all three, which is unlikely. And even if they manage to do the impossible, whatever results from the group will still need to go through the legislative process. Which means a bill that goes to at the very least the finance committees and then the floor. The next special session is set to start in just over three weeks. But according to many at the meeting, it won’t begin until the group is finished. As I said last week, most legislators do not want to go back to Juneau in August. Members of the Working Group plan to meet several times in locations around the state, before the legislature reconvenes in August. “I think there’s half a chance we could have productive conversations and progress,” says co-chair Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins (D-Sitka).
The governor’s budget vetoes earlier this month over $1.1 billion dollars’ worth include a significant hit to Sitka.
Gone are over $21-million dollars in major maintenance statewide for schools, $7.8 million dollars for repairs at Mt. Edgecumbe High School, $100,000 dollars to maintain the Mt. Edgecumbe Aquatics Center, just over $2-million for public radio, $600,000 for public television, and $600,000 for the statewide online library network.

Governor’s veto erases $4.4 million for new Craig harbor, but lawmakers say they’ll try again next year

The Prince of Wales Island community of Craig will have to continue waiting for a new harbor project. The Alaska Legislature included funding to get the project started: it would add a new breakwater for a new harbor. But that’ll have to wait for at least another year as Gov. Mike Dunleavy has vetoed the funding.
