La Jolla News Nuggets: Bicyclist memorial fund, Cove Cam, digital vaccine card, UCSD clinical trials, more

Campaign raising money for family of bicyclist killed in La Jolla crash The postdoctoral office at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla has organized a GoFundMe campaign and memorial fund for the family of Swati Tyagi, a Salk researcher who died June 23 on North Torrey Pines Road in La Jolla in a crash while riding her bicycle. More than $60,000 had been raised as of July 6. Investigators said Tyagi, 34, was riding in the right lane when she merged into the left lane and was struck from behind by a car. She died at the scene. The GoFundMe page was established by Tyagi’s colleagues to help provide emergency assistance to her husband, Ashim Rai, and 11-month-old son, Miransh.

Trash is giving La Jolla a bad name This letter was sent to San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria and Councilman Joe LaCava, with a copy to the La Jolla Light: The trash issue in and around La Jolla coastal walkways and parks is overwhelming. Accompanying this letter are two examples of trash cans along the coastal walkway at 7 p.m. I filled up a full-size trash bag from trash left on South Casa Beach. A trash can near the coast overflows with garbage in La Jolla. (Donna Murphy) Several families approached me and thanked me for cleaning up the beach and expressed sadness and disgust. They commented that they expected better from the famed La Jolla. They also expressed disappointment that La Jolla does not have recycle bins like Del Mar. I noticed when leaving that the trash cans by the high-end shops were more clean and plentiful.

Fourth of July fireworks a no-go in La Jolla

The show will not go on in La Jolla this Fourth of July. After state and city officials told organizers this week that the planned fireworks display would not be allowed over La Jolla Cove for lack of a needed permit, Deborah Marengo, director of the La Jolla Community Fireworks Foundation, told the La Jolla Light on Saturday that the show is off because “we were unable to secure a location.” Organizers had said at a Thursday news conference that they were hoping to move the show to another site, possibly La Jolla Shores. Asked about the possibility of any alternative form of celebration, Marengo said, “I can only speak to the fireworks, and there are none.”
