SOUTH BEND â A former employee at the St. Joseph County board of voter registration has filed suit against the county board of commissioners and voter registration board member Muhammad Shabazz, alleging Shabazz sexually harassed her during her time working in the office.
According to a complaint filed last week in federal court, Trisha Carrico served on the voter registration board as a Republican deputy clerk from 2018 until she resigned in November of this year because of Shabazzâs unwanted sexual advances. Shabazz is a Democratic member on the board.
The voter registration office is in charge of maintaining voter registration rolls, securing polling places and providing reports and voter lists for candidates, according to the officeâs website. The voter registration office is composed of two board members and six deputies, all of whom are appointed by the chairperson of countyâs Republican and Democratic parties.
Anthony âTonyâ Flora, longtime organized labor advocate and community activist, died Friday of complications from a stem cell transplant related to his 14-month battle with non-Hodgkins T-cell lymphoma. He was 70.
Flora, born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and raised in the Long Island suburb of Massapequa, settled in South Bend because it was the hometown of his wife, Kristina Ann Lackman, who died in 2011. He is survived by their sons, Matthew and Mark Flora, of South Bend.
Flora, who graduated from Johns Hopkins University on a full academic scholarship, was a mail carrier in South Bend for 30 years, but found his true passion as a steward for Branch 330 of the National Association of Letter Carriers. He also held the top local position in the AFL-CIO and was a fixture on labor picket lines and at protests for progressive causes ranging from immigration and raising the minimum wage to womenâs reproductive rights.
