The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department says two arrests have been made in the Saturday morning burglary of the Ace Hardware store in St. Joseph. The department has released the following:
At approximately 5:57 a.m. on January 30, 2021, officers from the St. Joseph Township Police Department, assisted by St. Joseph Department of Public Safety and Michigan State Police, responded to the scene of Ace Hardware, located at 2360 Niles Rd. in St. Joseph Township in relation to an alarm activation.
Upon arrival at the scene, responding officers discovered damage to the front entry doors of the business, indicating that entry had been made. Officers conducted further investigation and obtained surveillance video footage from the store, which identified two suspect vehicles and 9 suspects on camera causing damage and entering the store.

The St. Joseph Department of Public Safety is looking for a couple of thieves who stole cash from a resident’s home last week. It says the theft occurred around 1:15 p.m. on Wednesday, January 6 in the 900 block of Pleasant Street. The driver of a truck approached the homeowner claiming to be from a roofing company and asking for a bucket of water. While the driver of the truck had the homeowner distracted in the kitchen, a passenger from the truck got out of the vehicle and entered the home. He stole some envelopes full of cash from the homeowner’s purse before both men left the scene. The driver is described as a Hispanic man in his 40s. Both men are described as having medium builds. The vehicle is a newer model whiter Chevrolet Silverado Crew Cab. It had tinted windows and no plates and a black cover over the bed. Anyone with information on the suspects is asked to contact the St. Joseph Department of Public Safety.
ST. JOSEPH â An Illinois man was taken to the Berrien County Jail on Tuesday after leading police on a wild chase from New Buffalo to St. Joseph.
Berrien County Undersheriff Chuck Heit said Darrien Amar Conner, 21, was arrested on charges of fleeing and eluding police, carrying a concealed weapon, resisting and obstructing police, felony firearms, no valid operatorâs license, improper registration and being a fugitive wanted on a warrant from Cook County, Ill.
Heit said the incident started at 12:34 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 8, when a sheriffâs deputy spotted a black SUV speeding east on I-94 near U.S. 12 in New Buffalo Township. The deputyâs radar clocked the vehicle at 88 mph, Heit said.
