St. Joseph’s Health announced Dr. Paul Sansone has joined the palliative care department at
St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center in Syracuse. Dr. Sansone will lead a team of diverse and highly qualified clinicians, whose focus is improving the quality of life for patients coping with serious and complex illnesses.
Sansone is an experienced physician, leader and educator. Leading up to his fellowship in hospice and palliative medicine, he spent six years as the director of pain medicine at
Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital in Lebanon, N.H. Prior to that, he was an assistant professor of anesthesiology at

Dejan Topalovic, 36, of Syracuse, died Monday at University Hospital.
Born in Bosnia, he moved to Syracuse in 1997. A 2002 graduate of Westhill High School, Dejan earned an associate’s degree from St. Elizabeth College of Nursing, bachelor’s degree from Grand Canyon University and master of science in family nurse practitioner from SUNY Polytechnic Institute, according to his obituary.
His passion for helping others was complemented in his career in healthcare, starting at St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center and most recently at the Syracuse VA Medical Center as a nurse practitioner.

Police have closed a busy bridge over Interstate 81 as they investigate the shooting.
A witness called 911 at 10:47 a.m. Thursday after seeing the driver of a car fire a gun at another vehicle near West Bear and North Clinton streets, according to police scanner dispatches.
Minutes later, a shooting victim was dropped off at a Syracuse hospital, an Onondaga County 911 dispatcher said.
