ALBANY - New York on Wednesday will make a major shift in its COVID-19 safety protocols, dropping many capacity restrictions and ending its mask mandates for vaccinated New Yorkers.
The loosening of the rules is the biggest step yet for a state that was the epicenter of the early days of the pandemic that has killed nearly 53,000 New Yorkers, second most behind California.
But with statewide COVID test positivity rates hovering around 1% of those tested and more than 50% of New Yorkers vaccinated, the state is moving to limit the restrictions that once had most businesses shuttered.
