Riders veterans find joy in unique training camp

Saskatchewan Roughriders punter Jon Ryan during training camp practice on July 27, 2021. (Britton Gray/980 CJME) Despite a camp filled with restrictions and smouldering days, members of the Saskatchewan Roughriders found joy in returning to the field. Thursday marked the final day of practice during the Riders 2021 CFL training camp. While he’s been to many NFL and CFL training camps in his career, 39-year-old Jon Ryan is still finding joy in it, especially after a year-and-a-half away from football. “There’s definitely more yesterdays than tomorrows in my career, that’s for sure, going on 18 years. I think that’s part of the reason I’m just taking it all in, just enjoying it and just having a lot of fun – having more fun this year than I’ve ever had before. That’s part of it knowing there’s not too many of these left,” the punter said. “I’m here to have fun. Winning is fun so we have to win some games but when the fun stops, then I’ll be done.”

Fans flock to Riders scrimmage

By Derek Taylor Jul 24, 2021 | 7:30 PM The Riders Green and White scrimmage was the closest the team will get to game action before the season opener. And it showed the Riders still have some work to do. “Initially, I would say we need to get in better shape,” says Head Coach Craig Dickenson. “I think that was the one thing I noticed. We had a lot of guys that their tongues were dragging after one quarter.” The team had planned to play four 10-minute quarters of offense versus defense. Officials, Maxtron operators and even Play92’s Mark Johnston were brought in to simulate home game conditions as best they could. But the team reduced the third quarter to just five minutes, and the final quarter to three minutes. A planned overtime shootout was abandoned altogether.

Riders Canadian receiver rookie duo catching on during training camp

Saskatchewan Roughriders receiver Terrell Jana during training camp on July 21, 2021. (Saskatchewan Roughriders) A couple of Canadian Saskatchewan Roughrider rookie receivers are making some waves at training camp. Kian Schaffer-Baker and Terrell Jana are both trying to crack the 2021 CFL roster as rookies. Jana was a second-round draft pick for the Riders in 2021. He was taken 17th overall by Saskatchewan but prior to the draft, he was listed by some as a potential number one overall pick. “That’s a good question,” Jana said with a laugh when asked if he knew why he dropped so far in the Canadian draft. “Hopefully whatever the reasons were I can prove them wrong in the seasons coming up and the seasons following it, I can’t dwell on it that much. I think the silver lining is that I came to a great place.”
