Nomadland review – Chloe Zhao s triumphant ode to community | Nomadland

Sun 2 May 2021 03.00 EDT Accepting her Oscar for best director last week, the Chinese film-maker Chloé Zhao remarked: “I have always found goodness in the people I met, everywhere I went in the world.” That sentiment runs throughout Zhao’s third feature, a gentle tone poem with western genre inflections, mining the rich seams of human kindness that run through the margins of society. It also chimes with Jessica Bruder’s 2017 source book, in which the author chronicles true tales of the “new nomads” who took to the road after their savings were “obliterated by the Great Recession”, and for whom, “as for anyone, survival isn’t enough … we require hope. Based on a non-fiction book by Jessica Bruder, the film’s backdrop is the Great Recession in the early 2010s which causes Fern (Frances McDormad) to lose her job and forces her into living on the road in her van,

Starring: Frances McDormand, David Strathairn, Bob Wells, Linda May, Swankie. Cert 12A, 108 mins Nomadland is so unlike the Best Pictures we’re accustomed to. It’s quiet, where others have been boastful. It prefers simple looks or words to monologues. Where transformation does occur, it’s internal and not through some parade of wigs and prosthetics. With her third film, Chloé Zhao has established herself as one of our greatest practitioners of docufiction – she finds the cinematic that exists already within everyday life, rather than transforming the everyday until she deems it worthy of her camera.
