Progress of RTS Link project on track, says MRT Corp CEO

KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 19): Mass Rapid Transit Corp Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) said the progress of its Johor Baru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link is well on track as Malaysia started constructing its side of the infrastructure in November 2020, according to MRT Corp chief executive officer (CEO) Datuk Mohd Zarif Hashim. Speaking at a virtual launching event today, Zarif said it was in the midst of completing land acquisition for parts of the project, which include the Wadi Hana depot, and expects to complete the acquisition by April. “Within a short period of time, we have settled a lot of land issues. Normally, things like this will take about a year or two to be solved, but we have settled within the time frame,” he said during the unveiling ceremony of the winning design for the Johor Baru RTS Link station.

Ground breaking took place last November, which marked the start of construction of the RTS. The overall progress of the project has been encouraging, with more than 70% of the design work completed and expected to be finalised in the coming months, said Mass Rapid Transit Corporation (MRT Corp) CEO Datuk Mohd Zarif Hashim. “One of the key, or critical items for any project like this is [the matter of] land issues and land acquisition. However, we were able to settle a lot of them within a short period of time, including those for the land in Bukit Chagar,” he said, adding that these matters normally take one or two years to settle.

HSR cancellation  may dampen growth rate of properties in Johor

The termination of the Kuala Lumpur-Singapore high-speed rail (HSR) project may impact the accelerated growth rate of property developments in Johor, say industry experts. “We are still waiting for more information on how this will pan out in the coming months. The Covid-19 pandemic has thrown a spanner in the works as resources will be used to combat this plague and restore the economy,” says Samuel Tan, executive director of KGV International Property Consultants (Johor) Sdn Bhd, in an email interview. “We believe the original idea of having a common AssetsCo is critical to the success of the HSR project. Both countries having a common rail line must be committed to a similar system in procurement and operation of the system. As a long-term arrangement, a common AssetsCo will mitigate disputes with regards to cost management,
