COVID-19 mask policies fall to individual PA school districts

A year after students and staff in Pennsylvania schools were required to wear masks to protect against COVID-19, the lack of a statewide order has resulted in a patchwork of mask-related policies across the state’s 500 districts.   School boards have found themselves caught in a political battle as much as a health one as they attempt to implement mitigation policies during an ongoing coronavirus pandemic that features a new and highly transmissible delta variant. In July 2020, before vaccines came widely available, then-Pennsylvania Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine signed a public health order that included mandatory mask- wearing in schools.

GOP candidate for governor involved in fatal PA Turnpike accident

A Republican candidate for governor has denied he caused an accident on the Pennsylvania Turnpike last week in which a Bradford County motorcyclist was killed.   Charlie Gerow, 66, was involved in an accident Wednesday night in Chester County. A highway construction worker told Spotlight PA that he saw a car later identified as Gerow s traveling on the other side of the turnpike with a motorcycle wedged into its grill.   State police closed the turnpike for seven hours after the accident. No charges have been filed.   The Chester County coroner’s office said the victim was Logan Carl Abbott, 30. The cause of death was multiple blunt impacts and toxicology tests on the victim are pending, Chester County Coroner Christina VandePol told the Associated Press.
