Oldham County man recovering from COVID-19 thanks nurses who cared for him during stint in ICU

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) On Christmas Eve, a COVID-19 survivor called his release from intensive care the ultimate gift. I can t describe it, Phillip Draper said through tears. It s like the Christmas I thought I wouldn t have.   Draper, 65, spent most of his 25 days at Baptist Health La Grange in the ICU. He missed his anniversary, his birthday and Thanksgiving.  Draper needed maximum oxygen support, hospital officials said, just short of a ventilator breathing for him. On Dec. 19, though, he returned to his home in Oldham County.  On Thursday, WDRB News peeked in on a virtual reunion of sorts: Draper thanking some of the staff who cared for him. He called one nurse in particular, Yavette Lemmons, his Christmas angel and recalled how Lemmons simply holding his hand after so long in isolation was the medicine he needed.

More Ky hospitals got As on safety-grade report; most still get Cs

More Kentucky hospitals than the last time got a grade of A on a nonprofit group s rating of patient safety in hospitals, but for the fifth grading period in a row, most of the 45 Kentucky hospitals got Cs.     The Leapfrog Group, based in Washington, D.C., rates more than 2,600 hospitals. Most of Kentucky s 126 hospitals were not rated, but those that are have a majority of the hospital beds in the state.   The group does not grade small hospitals with critical access status because they don t have to report quality measures to the federal government, nor does it grade specialty hospitals, government hospitals, or hospitals for which there aren t enough publicly reported data. 

After 21 days in ICU with COVID-19, Oldham County man comes home for the holidays

Updated: 10:21 PM EST Dec 19, 2020 WLKY Digital Team One Oldham County man is coming home from the hospital just in time for Christmas.After spending 21-days in the intensive care unit at Baptist Health La Grange 65-year-old Phillip Draper was released Saturday night. He spent nearly a month in the hospital. During his battle with the virus, Draper was on maximum oxygen support and was nearly put on a ventilator.Draper s nurses and respiratory therapists celebrated as they wheeled him out of the hospital, where he was greeted by his wife, Sue Draper, and surprised by his grandchildren, who were unable to visit him during his treatment. Sue Draper credited the care and compassion of Phillip s nurses, who she says comforted him while he was isolated from his family. Hospital staff even celebrated his birthday on Wednesday while he was in the hospital.
