The Shelby County Health Department has confirmed the Delta COVID-19 variant, which originated from India, is present and spreading in Shelby County.  The Commercial Appeal asked five local experts some of the most frequently asked questions about this coronavirus mutation.  Is the Delta variant more virulent than other variants or is it just more contagious? Dr. Cyrilyn A Walters, staff physician and medical director for ambulatory services at Regional One Health: From the studies that have come out thus far, it appears that the Delta variant of SARS-COV2 is indeed more contagious than previous strains. Specifically, the studies compared it to the beta strain that came out of England. In that study, it was about 60% more contagious.
