(AP) Connecticut lawmakers passed a contentious bill Wednesday that prohibits limited pregnancy centers from using “deceptive advertising” about the pregnancy-related services they provide. The bill, which now moves to Democratic Gov. Ned Lamont s desk, cleared the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives on a mostly party-line vote of 87 to 56, following a lengthy debate that spanned much of the day. The legislation was previously passed in the state Senate. Proposed in previous legislative sessions, advocates who contend the measure is needed to ensure women aren t deceived into thinking these typically faith-based centers are family planning clinics that provide abortion and other reproductive health care.

A bill banning deceptive practices by limited services pregnancy centers religious facilities where critics say workers sometimes pose as medical professionals to lure women and hand out false information about abortions is headed for Gov. Ned Lamont’s desk, after the state House gave final approval to the proposal Wednesday. The measure prohibits deceptive advertisements in print publications, online postings, public statements or “any other manner” and applies whether the centers do it themselves or someone else does it on their behalf. The bill gives the Attorney General’s office the power to seek a court order to stop the deceptive practices. Violators would receive a notice to correct the problem within 10 days. If no action is taken, the attorney general could appeal to the courts,

Crisis Pregnancy Center Advertising Targeted by Pending Legislation in State Legislature May 13, 2021 A bill that would ban what abortion rights advocates describe as deceptive advertising at crisis pregnancy centers is waiting for a vote on the House floor after passing the Senate 21-15 on May 5th. The legislation has faced bipartisan opposition, with Sen. Cathy Osten, D-Sprague, and two other Democrats joining the Republicans to vote against the legislation. The proposal has been considered by legislators in four previous legislative sessions, most recently passing the Health Committee and House, but dying without a vote in the Senate in 2019.  Supporters of the proposal argue that “limited services pregnancy centers,” which do not offer referrals for abortion or emergency contraception, masquerade as comprehensive medical facilities, luring pregnant women in an effort to dissuade them from abortions.
