KITCHENER The first patient in the Guelph area has received a COVID-19 vaccine. Sarah Ricci was the first patient to get the shot. She’s the programs manager at Shelburne Long-Term Care north of Orangeville, which had one of the region’s worst COVID-19 outbreaks during the first wave of the pandemic. I feel great, happy to be here, she said. In total, 56 residents and 20 staff members contracted the disease. Twenty people died. Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health nurse Andrea Bothwell administered the first shot on Wednesday morning. Public health staff were familiarizing themselves with the process, which is different from other vaccines.

Headwaters Health Care Centre has reported the death of two patients who tested positive for COVID-19, as the local hospital continues to face an outbreak of the virus.
Headwaters Health Care Centre in Orangeville announced through a press release last Friday, December 18, that three patients in the medical in-patient unit (F-wing) of the hospital had tested positive for COVID-19. Two patients, one with hospital acquired COVID-19, and another with community acquired have also died.
Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health (WDGPH) reported two deaths related to COVID-19 in Dufferin County last week. WDGPH communications specialist Danny Williamson said that the individuals were a 56-year-old man and a 90-year-old man.

Ontario will be entering another province-wide lockdown come Boxing Day, as numbers of COVID-19 cases continue to rise daily and the Province looks to prevent inundating hospitals and intensive care units (ICU) with sick patients.
“This difficult action is without a doubt necessary to save lives and prevent our hospitals from being overwhelmed in the coming weeks. Make no mistake, thousands of lives are at stake right now,” said Premier Doug Ford. “If we fail to take action now the consequences could be catastrophic.”
The announcement of the lockdown was made by Ford during a press conference on Monday (Dec. 21). The lockdown will take effect on Dec. 26 (Boxing Day) and will remain in place until Jan. 23, 2021 for health units in southern Ontario.
