After their last two years of high school were interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Mississauga, Ont., teen and her peers crave a little normalcy to mark the end of this stage in their lives not another pared down, online-only event. It comes up in almost every conversation, she said. The fact that it s going to be a pre-recorded video you ll have to watch, it s really disappointing. It s not motivational, you know, because we re almost there at the end, and it s really sad that this is how our graduation is going to be.

The death of a Catholic school student in Brampton, Ont., has highlighted the demographic shift of those most affected by COVID-19.
Thirteen-year-old Emily Viegas’ April 22 death sent shockwaves through not only the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board but across the province and prompted the launch of an online fundraiser for her family that has raised over $139,000.
The board said in a statement “supports have been made available to students and staff.”
“Our thoughts and prayers continue to go out to the family and all those impacted by the loss of our young student,” the statement continued, adding, “As a board and at the local school level, we continue to focus on respecting the privacy and dignity of the family and allowing them to grieve.”
Mississauga teacher charged with sexual exploitation of teenager in 2009

A Mississauga elementary school teacher is facing a sexual exploitation charge dating back to an alleged incident from 2009.
Peel Regional Police say investigators received notice that in June of that year, a teacher’s assistant from a Toronto area high school allegedly sexually exploited a 16-year-old teenager within Peel.
On Wednesday, they arrested 39-year-old Jeffrey Gallo of Mississauga and charged him with sexual exploitation.
Gallo currently works as an elementary school teacher for the Dufferin Peel Catholic District School Board.

Police say the suspect, who is now 39, was charged Wednesday with sexual exploitation. He s due in a Brampton, Ont., courthouse on July 5.
