Graduates are struggling in the job market as the conventional education system does not equip students with the skills industries demand, according to Rizwan Rahman, president of the Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI).
Bangladesh has a labour force of about 6.35 crore which is growing at 2.2 per cent, meaning that there are around 20 lakh new entrants every year.
However, 38.6 per cent of the graduates face unemployment, and it indicates a mismatch of skills, said Rahman at a webinar styled, Industry-Academia Linkage: The New Frontier .

Bangladeshi researchers published more than 8,000 scholarly articles in international journals with impact factor in 2020 - which is third in terms of the number among South Asian countries.
An online magazine, Scientific Bangladesh, published the annual report on scientific documents of the country on January 2, analyzing the data of Scopus, a citation database of peer-reviewed literature including scientific journals, books and conference proceedings.
The impact factor, also known as Journal Impact Factor (JIF), is a metric used to evaluate the relative importance of a journal.
According to the report, the scholars of the country published 8,140 articles and other documents in 160 peer-reviewed and impact factor journals. The number was 6,363 in 2019, while it was 5,234 in 2018.

The majority of private universities are conducting research in name only while public universities also fail to reach the desired level of research, creating barriers for higher education to reach the expected level.
Such a scenario of research at the public and private universities came up at the latest annual report of the University Grants Commission (UGC). The 46th Annual Report of the UGC was submitted to President Abdul Hamid, also the chancellor of all public and private universities, on Sunday.
