Active COVID-19 cases in South Dakota fell for the fifth consecutive day, while hospitalizations dropped for the fourth straight day. The South Dakota Department of Health on Thursday, Jan. 21, reported 4,089 active cases, more than half of the number of cases on Dec. 21 (8,373) and more than four times fewer than the 16,867 active cases reported on Nov. 21. The number of people currently hospitalized sits at 185, while six new deaths were reported to bring the all-time total to 1,673. The DOH reported 337 new cases out of 1,172 new tests, resulting in a positivity rate of 28.8%. It is the fifth consecutive day the state has recorded a positivity rate lower than 30% on new tests, which has not occurred since a seven-day stretch from Oct. 3 to 9.
