Kansas ramps up vaccine administration after governor opens eligibility

Just two weeks after vaccines in Kansas opened up to all residents 16 years and older, over 400,000 doses of a coronavirus vaccine were administered, according to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. When Gov. Laura Kelly (D) announced on March 26 that all Kansans aged 16 and older would qualify for a vaccine, 1,067,865 doses had been administered in the state. According to KDHE’s weekly vaccine update, which updates every Thursday, 1,435,128 doses had been administered as of April 8. The total includes doses of the Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines. “With the anticipated increase in supply from the federal government, we must get every dose of vaccine into arms quickly,” Kelly said when she announced the move to Phase 5 of the state’s vaccination plan.

Douglas County moves back to in-person trials after a year long pause

Following more than a year of stalled jury trials, Douglas County began holding in-person jury trials at the county fairgrounds last week. Chief Judge James McCabria issued a statement on March 18 about his decision to utilize the fairgrounds and resume in-person jury trials. “We’ve consulted with all of the stakeholders, we’ve sought guidance from health experts throughout the pandemic, and we are confident that whether a trial occurs at the judicial center or at the fairgrounds, this district is fully capable of resuming this important function for the community,” McCabria said in the statement. McCabria’s decision to resume in-person jury trials stemmed from the recent decrease in weekly COVID-19 cases in Douglas County. By using the fairgrounds, up to 30 potential jurors can be screened at a time, and safe distances can be provided, according to the statement.
