Douglas County District Court Judge Sally D. Pokorny ordered a new trial for Albert Wilson during a virtual hearing on Tuesday.Wilson, now 24, was a 20-year-old student at the University of Kansas when he was accused of raping a then 17-year-old girl in Lawrence in 2016. Wilson was sentenced to more than 12 years in prison on April 3, 2019, after a jury found him guilty of raping the girl he met at a bar near the campus in Lawrence.According to the Lawrence-Journal World, the all-white and mostly female jury heard drastically different accounts of what happened in those few minutes from the young white girl and from Wilson, who is Black. A Lawrence man was charged with aggravated battery in Douglas County District Court on Wednesday.
Darren O. Cox, 36, made his first appearance in court Wednesday afternoon from the Douglas County Jail after he was arrested Tuesday evening.
Judge James T. George said the charge was a level-four felony and a conviction could result in a prison sentence of up to 172 months, a little more than 14 years. George appointed Cooper Overstreet to serve as Cox’s attorney.
