Analysis: Strange doings among New York Democrats

By Robert J. McCarthy The Buffalo News A few days ago during a virtual fundraiser for Erie County Democratic Chairman Jeremy Zellner, some big timers beamed in to support the leader of upstate New York’s largest Democratic organization. Of course, Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul made her virtual appearance. She’s a Buffalonian who has always been close to Zellner’s crew. But as Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo continues to squirm under probes of alleged sexual harassment, as well as disguising Covid-19 data (amid a host of other allegations), Hochul is viewed these days in a different light. Should Cuomo be forced from office, she would take over as leader of the Empire State.

New York’s far-right Republicans aren’t sleeping on what could be their widest opening yet to replace three-term Gov. Just a day after New York passed a $212 billion budget packed with progressive goodies, Rep. Lee Zeldin(R-N.Y.) declared he would run for governor next year. The MAGA-aligned congressman’s bid comes after Andrew Guiliani, the son of the bombastic former New York City mayor, said he had discussed his own gubernatorial ambitions with former President Donald Trump, his father s former client.

ALBANY Rep. Lee Zeldin announced Thursday that he will run for governor of New York next year, making him the first high-profile Republican to enter the race. “With one-party Democrat rule in NYC and Albany, the light that once shone as a beacon of what America can be has gone dark,” the Long Island Republican said in a Thursday morning announcement. “The New York that was once a magnet for the world’s best and brightest is now forcing its own to leave under the crushing weight of skyrocketing taxes, lost jobs, suffocating regulations, and rising crime resulting from dangerously liberal policies.”
