POUGHKEEPSIE – The Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office will be participating inNational Safe Boating Weekfrom May 22 through May 28. During this period, marine patrol deputies will be educating boaters and encouraging the safe and lawful operation of vessels.
“National Safe Boating Week is a great opportunity for boaters to take the time to ensure they have all the proper safety equipment on their boat in the event an emergency occurs,” said Sheriff Adrian “Butch” Anderson.
U.S. Coast Guardstatistics show that drowning was the reported cause of death in four out of every five recreational boating fatalities in 2019, and that 86 percent of those who drowned were not wearing life jackets.
Both marine unit rescues happened on the second day of National Safe Boating Week, which runs from May 22-28. Boaters are advised to take time this week to ensure they have the proper gear before heading out on the water.
Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial beginning of boating season, with hundreds anticipated to take to the water. Sunday s rescues served as reminders about the importance of being safe.
The Hudson River rescue was the Roosevelt Fire Department s first since it bought a boat from Mississippi in February 2020 for $60,000.
Jeff Scala, assistant fire chief, was aboard the boat during the rescue. He said the marine unit firefighters spent 1,449 hours training for this scenario in 2020 and it paid off.
