All-time high number of vet professionals in Ireland will benefit animal health and welfare

Niamh Muldoon The Veterinary Council of Ireland recorded 229 new vets and 107 new veterinary nurses on its register in 2020, it has announced today (Tuesday, January 12). The number of new vets and veterinary nurses is the highest ever recorded in a single year. The total number of vets and veterinary nurses on the Veterinary Council register currently stands at 3,045 and 1,087 respectively. This is an all-time high in terms of the number of veterinary professionals working in Ireland, as AgriLand recently reported. Of the 229 newly-registered vets, 100 were awarded their Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine degree from University College Dublin (UCD). The remaining vets graduated from a number of schools of veterinary medicine abroad, with the most popular being the University of Medicine in Budapest (which accounted for 31 newly registered vets) and the Warsaw University of Life Sciences in Poland (which accounted for 12 vets).

Student nurses want fair pay and treatment

Student nurses at Dundalk Institute of Technology are among those campaigning to get paid for the work they do while on placement in hospitals. The students work alongside regular staff, and in March this year the INMO called for the students nurses and midwives completing unpaid work placements during the pandemic to be paid and protected as employees. A scheme was put in place so that they were offered contracts as a healthcare assistants (HCAs) and are paid accordingly but this ended in August. Now, the Government is under pressure to extend the scheme for students on work placement during the continuing pandemic.
