Young people need to be warned of money mule dangers, says Judge

Banks and schools need to do more to raise awareness amongst young people of the dangers of acting as money mules for criminals, a judge has said.
Judge Melanie Greally made her comments at the sentence hearing of a young man who allowed his bank account to be used to hold the proceeds of crime.
Daniel Flanagan (21) had just sat his applied Leaving Cert exam in 2018 when he agreed to give his bank card and details to a man he owed a “drug debt” to, Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard on Thursday.
Defence solicitor Donal Quigley told the judge on Friday that his client had signed a plea of guilty which was lodged in court.
Judge Kelly told him he was being sent forward sentencing at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on April 16 next.
The accused was remanded on continuing bail.
Earlier, Detective Garvan Lennon of the Garda National Economic Crime Bureau said it was alleged the accused was involved in 15 ATM “transaction reverse frauds”. Bank machines were “manipulated” and cash was “forcibly removed”, he said.
Detective Garda Lennon said there was CCTV evidence and the accused had rented Go Car vehicle, a €9 an hour car sharing service.

A former rugby coach and teacher at a Dublin private school abused 23 students over three decades, a court has heard.
John McClean (76) abused the boys between 1973 and 1990 while he worked for Terenure College. He left the school in 1996 after certain allegations were made and took up a role coaching rugby with UCD.
Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard that the first complaint to gardaí in this case was made in 2016.
