There’s a very strong justification to extend the blanket ban on evicting tenants after the pandemic, an expert in homeless policy has said.
Professor Eoin O’Sullivan, a researcher at Trinity College Dublin, said the emergency protections for renters has made a significant differences in the number of families entering emergency accommodation.
The Government brought in an emergency ban on evictions and a freeze on rents at the outset of the pandemic. The moratorium has been extended until early March, in line with Level 5 Covid-19 restrictions.
At the end of December 2020, there were 755 families in emergency accommodation. This is the lowest monthly figure since December 2015.

THIS WEEK’S RTÉ Investigates documentary, Stuck in the Rough, was hard to watch. It revealed the harsh reality of living and sleeping on Dublin’s streets.
Importantly, the story was told by the people experiencing homelessness themselves. Dan, Natalie and Joe spoke their own words, shared the fears and frustrations and in public shed their tears.

This Monday night, RTÉ Investigates follows the lives of rough sleepers and homeless hostel users, examining the challenges they face and the difficulties in getting off the streets in a powerful new RTÉ One TV documentary.
There were 56 homeless deaths in the first 11 months of 2020.
In the lead up to Christmas, RTÉ Investigates documented the lives of people sleeping rough in Dublin City. The programme also examines the role of emergency hostels as a response to the problem, revealing how some can’t get into the hostels while others believe the streets are safer.
The number of rough sleepers in Dublin fluctuates. The most recent count by Simon found 139 people sleeping rough in the city over one week in November.
