The pressure caused by the Covid-19 third wave increased on Portlaoise hospital s Frontline pandemic staff on New Years s Eve with the admission of more patients who had tested positive for coronavirus.
Portlaoise staff spent Christmas Day caring for four patients but this rose to seven going into New Year s Day, according to the latest figures published by the Health Service Executive.

Portlaoise staff have been on the Covid-19 frontline since March, spent Christmas Day caring for four patients and had people who are critically ill after testing positive in their care going into New Year s Day, according to the latest figures published by the Health Service Executive.
The HSE Covid-19 Daily Operations Update for Acute Hospitals for December 30 was published on New Year s Eve for the Midland Regional Hospital Portlaoise and other hospitals around Ireland.
The report, which was finalised at 8 pm, also shows that four patients with Covid-19 were being treated at the Laois hospital going into December 31. The report also reveals that three of these patients are in the hospital s ICU having fallen critically ill due to infection.

A woman aged 79 and a Covid-19 ward nurse are the first two people to be vaccinated with the Covid-19 vaccine in the Republic of Ireland at St James s Hospital in Dublin which is in the same HSE hospital group as Portlaoise.

Annie is the first person in the 26 counties to get the jab. I feel very privileged to be the first person in Ireland to receive the vaccine,” said Annie after getting the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine. It shows that one of the four cases in the Laois hospital with the coronavirus was admitted for inpatient care on Christmas Day.
The report, which was finalised at 8 pm, also shows that a patient suspected of having Covid-19 was being treated in the hospital s ICU.
