The institution has also confirmed that online learning for new students will start next week Monday. It said five of its campuses will be closed until further notice, to allow the university to assess many conditions for re-opening and to allow students to return in a phased and restricted manner.

The students blockaded both sides of Mangosuthu Highway and the university’s main entrance with refrigerators and burning tyres. According to KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala, the protesters also threw stones at police officers who were at the scene. Gwala confirmed that a 24-year-old suspect was arrested for public violence. The university announced on Tuesday that it would be closing due to the ongoing workers’ strike that started last week.

PICS | DUT students stone police vehicle during protest over slow online registration

Thabiso Goba Teargas and stun grenades were fired by police during a student protest at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) on Wednesday morning. The students were protesting over what they say is a slow online registration process. A police car was stoned during the fracas and a couple of students were arrested. Zabelo Ntuli, president of the DUT Student Representative Council, said they wanted to shut down the university until walk-in and on-campus registrations are resumed. Ntuli said students who come from very far away have been turned away by the university and forced to sleep on the streets.
