North Texas hospitals running out of ICU beds for new COVID-19 patients
Those at nursing homes and other long-term care facilities in Texas started getting COVID-19 vaccines on Monday.
Many hospitals here in North Texas are almost out of room for new COVID-19 patients with more coming in by the day.
As of Monday, there were nearly 3,600 COVID-19 patients in the North Texas hospital region.
That is more than 23% of the available hospital beds in the 19 counties.
There are only 56 ICU beds available in the North Texas region, with just 18 remaining in Dallas County and six in Tarrant County.
New projections show hospitalizations in North Texas are likely to only get worse.
Revised to include COVID-19 cases in Denton County.
Dallas County on Saturday reported 1,318 more coronavirus cases, all of them new. Ten COVID-19 deaths also were reported.
Meanwhile, the state added over 1,000 cases to Collin County’s total, lifting the county’s case total above 45,000. With the addition of five new deaths, the death toll there hit 350 Saturday.
Saturday’s numbers include data processed Wednesday evening, and Sunday’s report will include COVID-19 data from Thursday through Saturday.
“It’s good news that we are reporting less deaths than we have seen in other days this week,” Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins said in a written statement.

Over the past two weeks, the availability of intensive care unit beds in regional hospitals has hovered between 83 and 60, even though there were nearly 800 ICU beds available early in the pandemic.
According to state data, COVID-19 patients make up 21.1 percent of staffed beds in the area’s hospitals, the highest mark Dallas-Fort Worth Hospital Council CEO and President Steve Love has ever seen. The 83 beds available are spread thinly over a 19 county area in North Texas. In Dallas County, there were just 16 ICU beds available at one point last week, with only seven in Collin County and three in Denton County.
