Police Chief Finalists Confront Rising Violent Crime

Updated on December 14, 2020 at 9:28 pm NBCUniversal, Inc. The seven finalists to become the new Dallas Police Chief face three days of interviews starting Tuesday. City Manager T. C. Broadnax, who makes the hiring decision, will talk with each of the finalists on Thursday and listen to input from people who conducted the other interviews before he makes his decision.  Broadnax said he intends to select a new police chief by the end of the month. The new chief will confront a spike in violent crime that outgoing Chief U. Renee Hall could not reverse. Hall announced her resignation in September after nearly three years on the job. She has not revealed future plans.

Dallas Narrows Down Search For New Police Chief

Dallas Police Chief U. René Hall’s troubled tenure is coming to an end. The city has been searching for her replacement ever since she announced in September that she’d be leaving the department at the end of the year. Now, it’s down to seven candidates. “I’m pleased to report our progress in this process and know the men and women of DPD look forward to new leadership continuing the work Chief Hall began,  City Manager T.C. Broadnax said in a press release Thursday. Four people up for the job have experience in the department. Albert Martinez left DPD as a deputy chief at the beginning of the year to fill a newly created security director position at the Dallas Catholic Diocese. There he oversaw security at 75 parishes and other facilities owned by the diocese. Martinez was also the commander of the Southwest Patrol Division and his law enforcement career spans almost 30 years.
