Santee residents concerned about toxins discovered at Sycamore Landfill

SANTEE    Santee residents and people living close to Mission Trails Regional Park in the city of San Diego near the Sycamore Landfill are concerned after receiving a letter from the county’s Air Pollution Control District about toxic air contaminants at the site. The letter, dated Jan. 15, but not received by locals or the city until late February, said that based on air emission data collected in 2013, there is a potential health risk for those living near the landfill at 8514 Mast Blvd. Studies of air matter are done every four years by the county, and based on data from 2013, which was approved by the pollution control group last October, some toxic air contaminants “may be increasing the cancer risks for people who live in the area.”

Voters will weigh in on 3,000-home Fanita Ranch housing project on the 2022 ballot

The fate of the 3,000-home Fanita Ranch development now rests with voters. The Santee City Council, with Mayor John Minto absent, unanimously voted Wednesday to place a measure on the November 2022 ballot asking whether the project should be built. But pending legal challenges by HomeFed Fanita Rancho, LLC, the project’s backer, and possibly others, may alter the council’s decision and the ballot measure’s future. The City Council gave its green light in September for the housing in the hills beyond Santee Lakes. Shortly thereafter, residents collected enough signatures, 3,854, to force the council to either rescind its approval or put the measure on the ballot.
