College vaccination day canceled in Tompkins County amid national pause on Johnson & Johnson distribution

Photo: WHCU ITHACA, N.Y. (WHCU) The Tompkins County Health Department is canceling Thursday’s planned vaccination day for college students. As federal officials review the Johnson and Johnson vaccine, there’s a nationwide pause in place on its distribution – including in New York State. The one-shot vaccine was going to be used for Thursday’s “College Student Vaccination Day,” which had been slated for students at TC3, Ithaca College, and Cornell. The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are unaffected by the temporary Johnson and Johnson stoppage, and will continue being offered at vaccine clinics in Tompkins County. Tags: Recent Headlines

Cornell president discusses vaccinations, fall semester plans at town hall

ITHACA, NY Following Cornell’s announcement that it would require students to be vaccinated in the fall, the administration held a virtual town hall on Thursday to answer questions from the Cornell community.  During the town hall, President Martha Pollack, along with other University administrators, discussed the University’s plans to distribute vaccines, logistics for an in-person fall semester, the preservation of certain remote working benefits and prioritizing the on-campus student experience.  Pollack kicked off the event by celebrating Cornell’s return to the green alert level and the start of planning for a vaccination rollout on campus. Despite these reasons for hope, Pollack urged caution as New York State continues to face thousands of new cases daily.

CDC recommends pausing Johnson & Johnson vaccine, college vaccination day canceled

The Tompkins County Health Department (TCHD) is sharing information regarding the Johnson & Johnson (J&J) vaccine. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is currently recommending that out of an abundance of caution, the use of J&J vaccine be paused following six reports of an extremely rare type of blood clot in the US. To-date, TCHD has administered a total of 130 doses of J&J vaccine to members of the Tompkins County community.  TCHD planned to administer J&J vaccine through a local ‘College Student Vaccination Day’ this Thursday, April 15. Due to the national pause of J&J distribution, TCHD is canceling the College Student Vaccination Day including Cornell University, Ithaca College, and Tompkins Cortland Community College. This cancellation follows CDC and New York State Department of Health guidance to pause administration of the J&J vaccine. Students will receive additional communications directly from their respective institution.
