After three years, County Administrator Jason Molino is leaving his position with Tompkins County and heading west to become the Executive Director of the Livingston County, New York Water and Sewer Authority.
Molino described the decision as a personal one stemming from the long hours and generally high demand of the job.
âI have four children,â he explained. âTheyâre 6, 8, 10 and 21 [â¦] We felt there was a change we needed to make in our lives as a family to spend more time together, and this was an opportunity that would bring us closer to our extended family. The choice came from that.â
As part of its efforts to transform a mostly diesel fleet to all electric by 2035, Tompkins Consolidated Area Transit launched its first group of electric buses Thursday morning, Earth Day 2021.
Proterra, an automotive and energy storage company based southeast of San Francisco, delivered seven 40-foot ZX5+ buses to TCAT in March.
The buses, estimated at around $1 million each, were funded by several federal, state and local funders, including the city of Ithaca, Tompkins County and Cornell University.
“Earth Day is a fitting day for us to celebrate this important TCAT milestone and marks our community’s long-standing commitment toward lowering carbon emissions, and we have many people to thank for that,” TCAT General Manager Scot Vanderpool said. “TCAT’s aim is to transform what is now a mostly diesel-powered fleet to all electric by 2035 and this day represents our first steps toward meeting that goal, thanks to the help of many of our stakeholders and supporters.”

Athletes at the Tokyo Olympics who come down with minor symptoms of COVID-19 could be isolated in a hotel lined up by local organizers of the games. The Japanese news agency Kyodo on Sunday said organizers are working to secure 300 rooms in a hotel near the Athletes Village. The agency cited unnamed officials with knowledge of the plan.
Tompkins County, along with its 16 municipal partners, welcomes public review and comment on the draft 2021 Hazard Mitigation Plan (HMP) Update. Revised every five years to reflect changes in priorities and progress in local mitigation efforts, the HMP identifies natural hazards the county can expect to face and develops strategies to reduce risk and build resilience. The 2021 HMP, facilitated by the Tompkins County Department of Planning & Sustainability, updates the countyâs 2014 Hazard Mitigation Plan and is a key implementation piece for the larger Tompkins County Resiliency and Recovery Plan.Â
Once approved by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the plan ensures Tompkins County and its partners remain eligible for pre-disaster funding through FEMA s Hazard Mitigation Assistance programs and other non-emergency disaster assistance like FEMA s new BuildingResilient Infrastructure and Communities program.Â
