ITHACA, N.Y. (WHCU) The Ithaca Police Department and the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office have announced new changes as part of the reimaging public safety initiative.
The agencies will be changing the name of their Special Weapons and Tactics Team, known as SWAT, to the Ithaca-Tompkins Specialized Response Team. The Critical Incident Negotiations Team will also be renamed to the Ithaca-Tompkins Crisis Negotiation Team.
The changes reflect Ithaca and Tompkins County’s efforts of making their image and values match the community’s expectations.
Other changes include ending No-Knock Search warrants for drugs, uniform color changes, and rebranding the Mobile Command Truck, including removing the weapon storage in the back.
