Besides, vaccination in limited scale among frontline health workers will begin at Kurmitola General Hospital at 3:30pm on Wednesday. About 25 health workers will be inoculated at the very beginning in the hospital. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the programme through video conference from her office. Health Minister Zahid Maleque announced it on Tuesday after inspecting the preparations of the hospital. As the first vaccine recipient in Bangladesh, Senior staff nurse of the hospital, Runu Berunika Costa will take the jab. She is In- Charge of the dialysis unit of Kurmitola Hospital.

A special Air India flight carrying 5 million doses of the jab, developed by Oxford University and AstraZeneca and manufactured by the Serum Institute of India (SII), landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka at 11am. Bangladesh has now seven million doses of the Covishield vaccine, including 2 million received from the neighbouring country as a gift, in stock. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will flag off the much-awaited vaccination programme on Wednesday.

This will be the first consignment of the 30 million doses of ‘Covishield’ purchased from India. Bangladesh would get the vaccines in six phases as every consignment will carry 5 million vaccine doses per month.    Talking to reporters on Sunday, Health Minister Zahid Maleque said 50 lakh doses of Covid-19 vaccine, purchased from India s Serum Institute, will reach Dhaka on Monday. “The Indian government already has given us 20 lakh vaccines as a gift. As per the agreement, another 50 lakh vaccines will arrive in the country tomorrow. The government has already taken all preparations to store the 70 lakh vaccines,” he said on Sunday.

The government has almost completed the groundwork for rolling out Covid-19 vaccine in the country early next month. It gears up for the mass inoculation campaign as the first consignment of 50 lakh doses, purchased from Serum Institute of India (SII), arrived in Dhaka yesterday. Officials said five public hospitals in the capital were all set to pilot the vaccination. They also said the hospital authorities had already trained 124 healthcare professionals and prepared designated places, where the shots would be administered. The prime minister will inaugurate the piloting at Kurmitola General Hospital on January 27 [tomorrow] at 3:30pm, Prof Nasima Sultana, additional director general of DGHS, told The Daily Star yesterday.
