This complimentary service spanning 18 counties is made possible with support from Dogwood Health Trust.
The initial support from Dogwood has enabled Hola to purchase the van necessary to provide the transportation, but in order to meet long-term goals and reach more people in the region, additional funding for Vamos Carolina will be necessary.
Hola Carolina has established a transportation hotline that is now open for families and workers in the Latinx community. Those interested in round-trip transportation to a vaccination can call to schedule at 828-989-5248 or visit holacarolina.org The primary barrier to vaccinations for our families and workers is due to lack of a vehicle. We recognize how critical it is to close the vaccination gap in rural Latinx communities by providing much-needed transportation services,” said Adriana Chavela, executive director of Hola Carolina.

Just three months before its opening, PEAK Academy, Asheville’s newest charter school, is in search of its second superintendent after Raul Saldaña resigned in late March due to “personal reasons,” school officials said.
The school will announce a new superintendent within two weeks, PEAK Operations Coordinator Meredith Foulke said.
“I can’t give too much information about where we are in that search,” she said. “All I can say is that we do hope to make an announcement pretty soon.”
Saldaña was hired as the school’s leader last summer and started in August. He moved to Asheville from New Mexico where he worked in the Las Cruces Public School District. He oversaw PEAK Academy s curriculum and enrollment planning, according to the school s Facebook page.
One of the ways that the independent monitor answered questions about charity care is they explained that when Mission was being purchased by HCA they had the option to move forward with Mission’s charity care policy. And instead, the board at Mission felt that HCA’s policy was actually going to cover patients better. And so they did make changes to that charity care policy to go with HCA’s policy instead.
Here’s how Ron Winters, principal of Gibbins Advisors, talked about charity care at the virtual meeting:
“It is difficult to qualify for charity care, and until you qualify, they have the right to ask you to pay a deposit and you don’t have the right to get it back,” said Winters.

As physicians quit Mission Health facilities in western North Carolina following the system s purchase by HCA Healthcare, an independent monitoring team said they were paying attention to the issue.
The outside monitor Nashville-based consulting firm Gibbins Advisors was put in place as a result of stipulations the North Carolina attorney general made in greenlighting Mission Health s $1.5-billion sale to HCA in 2019. Team leaders held a 2-hour virtual meeting on Wednesday to address the issue for members of the public.
Recently, many of the questions submitted to the independent monitor by members of the communities that Mission Health serves relate to physicians leaving local facilities, leaders at Gibbins said during the online webinar.
