Three county communities chosen for Heart and Soul program

A community-driven program  that s what the county needed. Something with teeth and grit. A program that gives a voice to the voiceless. One that residents and leaders alike could really get behind. Lance Grable found it. As director of the Beaver County Office of Planning and Redevelopment, he s always looking for ways to create avenues for community empowerment and success. A few years back, he attended a conference with some of his colleagues. There, he listened to a presentation called Community Heart and Soul.  He was intrigued. So he attended another meeting, and then another. After getting the go-ahead from the county commissioners, Grable filled out an application for the Community Heart and Soul program a community development model, accompanied by a grant, and spearheaded by residents.

Local opportunities to give blood in Feb

The American Red Cross is asking for blood donations.  During the winter months, inclement weather and seasonal illnesses can impact donors. Add that on top of an already unpredictable year due to the coronavirus pandemic.  To keep its blood supply strong, the Red Cross is urging healthy individuals to make an appointment to give blood or platelets in February. For Beaver County residents interested in donating blood, a donation opportunity will be available from 1 to 6 p.m. on Feb. 1 at Moun Carmel Evangelical Presbyterian Church, 2720 Brodhead Road in Aliquippa. Northern Beaver County and Lawrence County residents can visit Washington Alliance Church, 2119 W. Washington St. in New Castle. Donation collection will take place from 1 to 6 p.m. Feb. 11.

Report: Pa tobacco prevention efforts failing

Pennsylvania has received yet another mediocre report card from the American Lung Association, failing in several categories. Tobacco use remains the nation s leading cause of preventable death and disease. In Pennsylvania, the ALA gave the state failing grades for its efforts to reduce and prevent tobacco use, including e-cigarettes. The report grades states in five areas: funding for state tobacco prevention programs; strength of smoke-free workplace laws; level of state tobacco taxes; coverage and access to services to quit tobacco; and ending the sale of all flavored tobacco products. Pennsylvania received failing grades for funding for tobacco prevention programs, level of state tobacco taxes and ending the sale of all flavored tobacco products. 

Lions Club receives goggles, hand sanitizer for the county

Lions Club receives goggles, hand sanitizer for the county The Lions of Pennsylvania were on the receiving end of some donations this past week. Six Lions Club International district governors representing western Pennsylvania received donations of disposable goggles and hand sanitizer from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) on Jan. 18. The last time these governors got together, they were loading donations into a semi-trailer heading to Louisiana to help with the flood relief effort, said Erwin “Chip” Campbell of Ellport, Lions Club District Governor of 14-N. Back in October, Lake Charles suffered from the aftermath of hurricanes Laura and Delta. Local Lions clubs throughout western Pennsylvania joined together to donate around 1,000 boxes of supplies to support Lake Charles during that time.

Central Valley approves all-day kindergarten, continues evaluating potential cost

Editor s note: This story has been updated to reflect that Center Grange would be renovated in the full-day kindergarten program.  CENTER TWP. Central Valley officials say they will move forward with plans to begin an all-day kindergarten program so long as they can find a way to fund it.  The school board was split during Thursday evening s voting meeting. The board voted 5-4 in favor of implementing all-day kindergarten beginning in the 2023-24 school year. School board members Thomas Mowad, Joe O Neill, Dr. Nick Unis and George Zaritski voted against the measure, saying it is fiscally unwise, mainly because they don t believe it is fiscally wise.
