New Surge of COVID Is Spreading Like Wildfire in Illinois Prisons

With COVID-19 raging throughout the United States, there is a growing sense of desperation among people in prison. Pablo Mendoza, who recently got out of prison, said that those inside “are tired of the lockdown.” They spend 23.5 hours a day in their cells. They have not had visits from their loved ones for almost a year. Those who have caught COVID and are believed to be immune get out for yard time. Others are “weighing options,” according to Mendoza: “Stay safe, or get the virus so they can get some open air. They are willing to risk it; this is the mood right now.”

Transgender inmate settles suit alleging she should have been housed in female prison

A transgender inmate convicted of “violent crimes” has reached an undisclosed settlement with the Illinois Department of Corrections in a lawsuit alleging she should have been transferred to a female prison.   District Judge Nancy Rosenstengel entered an order last month stating that the action is settled in its entirety. The parties requested additional time to finalize settlement documents, so she ordered the case to be dismissed with prejudice in 120 days.  The parties first engaged in a settlement conference on Nov. 18 via zoom before Magistrate Judge Mark Beatty. Plaintiff Tay Tay appeared with attorneys Sheila Bedi and Vanessa Del Valle. Attorneys Carla Tolbert and Melissa Jennings appeared on behalf of the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC). The case did not settle at that time and a second settlement conference was ordered.
