Sally Ride to be honored on coin
The U.S. Mint announced that late La Jolla resident and astronaut Sally Ride and late writer Maya Angelou will be the first two women honored on coins issued under the American Women Quarters Program.
“Sally would be so moved by this great honor,” said Tam O’Shaughnessy, Ride’s life partner and co-founder of Sally Ride Science at UC San Diego Extension. “It’s especially fitting that it comes during the 20th-anniversary celebration for Sally Ride Science. This tribute reflects Sally’s legacy not only as a trailblazing astronaut but also as a champion of diversity and inclusion in STEM [science, technology, engineering and math] fields.”
SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – The American Women Quarters Program will celebrate the accomplishments and contributions made by women to the development and history of our country.
Beginning in 2022, and continuing through 2025, the U.S. Mint will issue up to five new reverse designs each year.
The obverse of each coin will maintain a likeness of George Washington, but be different from the design used during the previous quarter program.
Famed writer Maya Angelou and trailblazing astronaut Dr. Sally Ride will be the first distinguished American women celebrated on the 2022 quarters.

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) â The United States Mint will honor astronaut and former UC San Diego professor Dr. Sally Ride as part of its effort to highlight prominent women on quarters.
Ride and famed writer Maya Angelou will be the first two women to grace the quarter as part of the Mint s American Women Quarters Program, which will issue five different reverse designs, on the tails side, annually that feature the accomplishments and prominent women from 2022 to 2025.
The Sally Ride quarter will begin circulating next year. The quarters will continue to feature George Washington on the heads side, though it will be designed in a way that sets it apart from the current image.

Sally Ride Science, a program under the auspices of UC San Diego Extension and named for America’s first woman in space, is celebrating two decades in operation this year. And many of its signature programs are going virtual.
Though the COVID-19 pandemic may have provided a shove for the program to go online, plans were already in the works to expand Sally Ride Science’s reach.
