A teenager from the Jersey Shore was hospitalized after being impaled by a javelin at a track-and-field event, authorities said.
Firefighters in Toms River were called to cut the javelin without vibration before taking the victim to the hospital, initial reports said.
It was unclear whether the boy was a student observer or an athlete participating in the event.
The incident occurred about 5:40 p.m. in an open field outside Donovan Catholic High School at 711 Hooper Ave., Toms River police said.

The javelin was impaled several inches into his right thigh; but there was no visible bleeding, and the victim was conscious and talking to first-responders, she told NJ.com

An Ocean County, N.J., teenager was hospitalized Tuesday after he was impaled during a track-and-field javelin throw, authorities said.
The incident occurred about 5:40 p.m. in a field outside Donovan Catholic High School on Hooper Avenue in Toms River, police said.
“Upon arrival, officers were directed to an open field near the track-and-field training area” where they found an injured 16-year-old boy, said Jillian Messina, spokeswoman for the Toms River Police Department.
The teen, who is from Pine Beach, had suffered an injury from a “javelin impaled in his right thigh,” Messina said in an email.

TOMS RIVER, NJ Fire damaged a deck at the home used for the filming of the 1979 movie The Amityville Horror, authorities said Wednesday evening.
The fire on Brooks Road was reported about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday by a neighbor who heard an explosion and saw the fire, said Jillian Messina, media relations specialist for the Toms River Police Department.
The neighbor told police he did not believe anyone was home, she said. Firefighters with the Toms River Fire Company were able to quickly extinguish the fire, which had caused a propane tank to explode, on the rear deck of the home.

TOMS RIVER, NJ A Toms River couple has been charged with promoting prostitution and money-laundering following a yearlong investigation into activities at Spa 1800 on Lakewood Road, the Ocean County Prosecutor s Office announced.
Wayne Lefkowitz, 56, and Guihua Cui, 51, who are married, each have been charged with promoting prostitution and two counts each of money laundering, Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer said. The charges were filed April 28 and 29, he said.
