Region confirms 71 COVID-19 cases, another death Friday

It raises the local total to 10,608.
There has also been another COVID-related death, the health department confirming it was a man in his 50s.
It puts the death toll at 224.
The active caseload has also jumped by 39 cases, to 396.

67 cases have screened positive for variants of concern - seven are the U.K. strain - the variant of the 60 others has not been determined yet
29 people are receiving treatment in hospital, five are in intensive care

Region of Waterloo Public Health reported 93 new COVID-19 cases on its dashboard Friday afternoon, although three are linked to revisions to previous counts.
It s the largest one-day increase locally to date.
This brings the new total up to 4,329 cases for the region since March.
The number of active cases has increased to 426 from 382 since Thursday.

There have been 131 deaths in the region linked to the virus. The latest was confirmed on December 10.
